Purbach est une plaine close de 118 Km et profonde de 2980 m situé sur le plateau continental, prés du méridien central qui passe par le mur oriental. Le cratère tordu Regiomontanus (126x110 Km, 1730 m) est attaché au mur méridional de Purbach. Le mur externe de Purbach est fortement érodé, avec la section la plus intacte étant le long des côtés Est et Nord-est. Le mur partagé entre Purbach et Regiomontanus est incisée et impacté. Le mur est tordu le long  du  bord occidental, donnant l'aspect d'une double muraille. Purbach G (27 Km) se trouve en travers du mur Nord-ouest. Le plancher de Purbach présente de nombreux craterlets. Il est relativement lisse dans la moitié orientale, avec une série d'arêtes correspondant aux contours partiels de cratères fantômes juste à l'ouest du point médian du cratère. Si le cratère possédait une crête centrale, elle a été enlevée ou fait partie des arêtes à l'ouest.

Purbach is a large lunar crater located in the rugged southern highlands of the Moon. The distorted crater Regiomontanus is attached to the southern rim. To the northwest is Thebit crater and just to the northeast lies the La Caille crater.
The outer wall of Purbach is heavily worn, with the most intact section being along the east and northeast sides. The shared rim between Purbach and Regiomontanus is incised and rugged. The wall is distorted along the western edge, giving the appearance of a double-rim, with the second rim distended toward the west. The northern wall is almost completely destroyed, and somewhat irregular 'Purbach G' lies across the northwest rim.
The crater floor is relatively smooth in the eastern half, with a low series of ridges and a partial "ghost-crater" outline just to the west of the crater mid-point. If the crater possessed a central peak, it has either been removed or forms part of the ridges to the west.
