Vieta est un cratère de 88 km et profond de 4500 m situé au Sud-Ouest de la Mer des Humeurs (Mare Humorum).  Les murailles de Vieta sont  escarpées  et descendent de façon abrupte sur un fond plat, inondé par la lave. La partie Nord du plancher est plus tourmentée avec des monticules et dépressions. Au centre une élévation est encadrée à l’Ouest et à L’est par des craterlets. Au Sud-Est on trouve Fourrier (53 km, 3700 m) au fond plat avec deux cratèrelets dont un central. A l’Est se situe De Gasparis (30 km, 770 m) inondé par la lave est dont le fond est quadrillé par Rimae De Gasparis, rainures qui iradient sur une zone de 130 km de diamètre. Plus au Nord, le cratère Cavendish (56 km, 2350 m) chevauché par Cavendish E sur la muraille sud. Cavendish possédent deux cratères fantôme sur son fond plat.

Vieta is a lunar impact crater that lies due north of the Schickard walled plain, in the southwestern part of the Moon. About a half crater diameter to the southeast is the smaller Fourier crater, and to the north-northeast lies Cavendish crater.
The outer rim of this crater has undergone some impact erosion, and small craters lie along the northeast, south, and north-northwestern sides. The inner walls are irregular, with incised bases in some locations. A chain of small craters lies across the northern half of the interior floor, following a line toward the east-northeast. The floor is nearly level, but with some uneven areas in the south and by the crater chain.
