Werner est un cratère de 70 Km et profond de 4220 m situé sur le plateau continental sud central. Il est presque jointif avec le cratère Aliacensis (80 Km, 3680m) au Sud-est. Directement à l'ouest de Werner on trouve le cratère tordu Regiomontanus (126x110 Km, 1730 m) et sur le versant Nord les restes du cratère Blanchinus (58x68 Km). La muraille du cratère de Werner est beaucoup plus jeune et  moins  érodée  que  les  autres  grands  cratères

environnants. La haute muraille est bien visible en lumière rasante. Le mur intérieur est en terrasse. le plancher est plat avec de nombreux monticules et une crête centrale excentrée. La muraille d'Aliacensis est généralement circulaire, avec un bombement extérieur sur le mur oriental. Le mur intérieur est légèrement en terrasses en particulier dans le Nord-est. Le plancher intérieur est généralement plat, avec une crête centrale légèrement excentrée au Nord-ouest du point médian.

Werner is a prominent lunar impact crater that lies in the rugged south-central highlands of the Moon. It is almost joined with Aliacensis crater to the southeast, and the pair form a rugged valley in the intervening gap. Due west of Werner is the distorted Regiomontanus crater, and to the north is the remains of the Blanchinus crater.
The rim of Werner crater shows little appearance of wear, and is much younger and less eroded that the other large craters in the surroundings. The interior wall is terraced, and there is a noticeable rampart on the exterior. There are several low rises on the crater floor and a notable central peak. Rev. T. W. Webb noted two very bright spots along the sides of this crater, more visible in larger aperature telescopes. The Clementine Lunar Atlas displays a patch of high albedo surface along the northern inner wall.
